About Karen Blissitt

Karen graduated BVSc from the University of Liverpool in June 1982. After 3 years in general practice, she joined the R(D)SVS Edinburgh where she is currently Professor of Equine Cardiology and Anaesthesia. She was a Horserace Betting Levy Board, Veterinary Research Training Scholar and was awarded her PhD in 1993 for her thesis echocardiographic studies of valvular and ventricular function in horses. Karen obtained the DVA in 1995, DipECVAA in 1997 and SFHEA in 2018.

Her clinical and research interests include transoesophageal echocardiography for assessing ventricular function in anaesthetised horses, sudden cardiac death in racing Thoroughbreds, 3D echocardiography and Transvenous Electrocardioversion for treatment of atrial fibrillation. Karen is married to Martyn and has two, now young adults Edward and Grace.
